This recipe of dreams, success, fun, and passion seemed to work exceptionally well for the Wikkerink family of Willswikk Holsteins, whose farm is in Cobble Hill on Vancouver Island. For Bill, Gert, William, Jason and Cindy this recipe cooked up another (their second) Master Breeder Shield, the highest award bestowed upon breeders of quality cattle. Congratulations and the utmost respect go out to the family as they are BC's only Master Breeders awarded a shield this year - quite an accomplishment. As Dale Carnegie, famous American writer, once said, "Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get."
Aside from the everyday chores of running our farms, January seems to be one of the busiest months of our dairy industry calendar. Meetings, seminars, farm tours and trade shows leave nothing behind in the thirst for dairy knowledge. This is your chance to be involved. The issues of the day are important and often critical to the success of our operations. For the majority, those operations are successful. That didn't happen by accident and it didn't happen overnight. It happened because of foresight, involvement, leadership, concern, hard work, ideas, and the knowledge of those who have a passion for our industry. To continue that success for ourselves and the future generations of our sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, the industry needs more. It needs you! Be a part. Do your part. Remember, he who prepares today sets the stage for tomorrow's achievement. Be a part of the preparation!
So now that we are in a new year, how many of us have made New Year's resolutions and stressed about not keeping them? Just remember, a New Year's resolution is something that goes in one ear and out the other, and that what the New Year brings to us will largely depend on what we bring to the New Year. The trouble comes when the New Year's resolutions collide with the old year's habits. For myself, I am another year older, another year wiser…Oh well, one out of two isn't bad! And finally, some food for thought in the New Year: Some students drink at the fountain of knowledge… others just gargle. Remember, long-range goals keep you from being frustrated by short-term failures. Happy successful 2014 everyone!
