So I thought I would include my Tribute to the Cow, because during this time of holiday celebrations, we really need to take a moment to thank THE COW for the lifestyle we all enjoy. Enjoy….
When I was asked to do a salute to the cow, my gut reaction was to refuse. That comfort factor was a big issue, being an older silent type of guy. Actually, I was going to use "strong, silent type" but I think "older" is more appropriate, and many of you may disagree with the "silent" part, as I have talked many an ear off over the years! I decided that this short message would give me an opportunity to acknowledge and be thankful to the Dairy Cow. We are here to celebrate her successes and because of that, our successes. Our modern farms, our powerful tractors, our beautiful homes, our fancy vehicles, we owe to her.
In this era of robotic milkers, I still have the luxury of interacting with each of my cows one on one. I enjoy reading their cow signals. I enjoy resting my forehead on their thighs as I wipe their udders. I enjoy the tongue pats as I remove the milk units, and I enjoy watching the milk go through the hoses into the pipelines. And yes, I still like milking in a stanchion barn because it allows me to do all these things. I guess I am still a little slow on that changes thing the experts tell us we have to go through. But you know, I still so enjoy that one on one with these beautiful creatures, these docile mothers that reward us with the fruits of their labour. They are responsible for our way of living, just as we are responsible for their way of living. These are huge responsibilities on both our parts.
So in these times of enormous changes, I guess my little farm doesn't fit into that category! Let's remember not to remove ourselves too far from this beautiful creature. The new barns, the robotic milkers, the automatic cleaning systems, the automatic heat detectors, the TMRs, and genomics all represent new, exciting and efficient changes. But let us never forget that the common factor in all of this is the Dairy Cow! The producer of that udder gold, that white gold versus that black gold! Wow, wow to the cow! She deserves respect. Let us all raise our glasses of nutritious white gold, and salute her, the dairy cow, the Dairy Queen!
