The name "Gary's Gossip" started as a fun joke when the paper was purchased, and it has managed to survive the jokes, the temptation to change the name, the stresses and worries ("Is anyone reading it?") through to the present day level of confidence that maybe it did in some small way inspire farmers to smile or even gain some knowledge through a "gossip" column. How ironic! Reading, passion, farmers, knowledge, cows, fun, farming, inspiration, laughs, friends, and family are huge and important words in my life of dreams. I had the fortune of having a column named after me to foster some of those dreams. Eventually I got over the impossible possibility of writing a column for a special breed of people called dairy farmers, who are over-worked and time-deprived, yet still find the time to read the meanderings of a fellow farmer. This is my swan song or swan column so to speak.
One of my favourite TV shows, called "Just for Laughs: Gags," causes fits of laughter and tears for me in those times that I really need it. The show ends with a little green gnome yelling, "It's over!" Writing this column will be a little emotional for me as I realize that after 20 fabulous years of writing this column, it's over. I live my life surrounded by dreams, and Gary's Gossip was a dream that became reality. Also part of that reality is that it has run its course and I admit that with a tinge of sadness. It has inspired me in a way that will last forever and my hope is that in some small way it has also inspired some of you out there in "dairy land". My hope was to inspire a little laughter, a little soul searching, a little fun, and a little knowledge.
As I reflect back, I am genuinely flattered by the response I have received over the years. The gut churning, the doubts, the sometimes futile grasping for ideas in the recesses of my mind, have been so worth it. The girls in the office can also breathe a sigh of relief as the relentless pursuit of my column at deadline time will be no more.
The desire to inspire, the niggling of laughter, the battle of focus, the tears of memory, the depression of deadlines, the impact of knowledge, and the pressure to deliver light and informative reading, are all what the column has meant to me. That was what Gary's Gossip was all about. I was able to process my thoughts, my ideas, my rants, and my words through the silence of a column. What a dream! In silence and tears, I was able to write special and lasting tributes to my beloved mom and dad as they passed on to another dimension. Tributes to the four-legged friends who passed through my life were also done in the comfort of silence. The swirl of memories is now making a direct hit on my focus, and so to prevent the further silent rantings of a fun-loving farmer, I take this opportunity to sign off on my dream, my passion, and my wonderful memories of a little editorial column that did…Gary's Gossip.
Editorial note: With Gary's Gossip being transferred into the memories of archives and minds, the BC Holstein News will continue on, better than ever. I will still have the honour of attending meetings, seminars, shows, tours, and banquets as owner and representative of the BC Holstein News. I will be dragging around my ever-present camera to take those candid shots for "Gary's Dairy Diary." The changing of seasons and times inspire new challenges, and the BC Holstein News has always adapted to these changes throughout the 20 years that Karen and I have owned and produced the paper, with its familiar motto: Written for farmers by farmers! That will continue.
