BC HOLSTEIN NEWS ❆ CHRISTMAS 2021
After the Water comes a Flood of HOPE
Generosity and Kindness...
So many caring people throughout our broad dairy family! We want to recognize a few more donations, but we know there are SO MANY others we don’t know of yet. THANK YOU to everyone who has been coming forward one after the next to support the flood recovery efforts. Your generosity is turning heartache into HOPE!
Thrust into the middle of the unprecedented floods in BC, WestGen has felt first-hand the devastation, but have also benefitted first-hand from the surrounding farming community’s heroic efforts to assist us in evacuating animals from our barn; and thereafter have been in a position to return that support to other farmers in need. “It has been a humbling, emotional and yet inspirational week,” Chris Parry, CEO, WestGen Group sums up. “For many, there is a long road ahead to recovery, but the farming community and WestGen will be there to do what we can.”
BC’s Sumas Prairie represents a small geographical piece of the western Canadian WestGen territory, but farmers right across the four western provinces are donating and offering assistance to their peers. It is in that spirit of giving that WestGen is donating $100,000 to the BCDA’s disaster relief fund. “The need is great. As a farmer-owned, farmer directed company, this is a donation on behalf of all farmers in western Canada,” states Richard Boonstoppel, WestGen President.
Agrifoods Cooperative and their associated brands have stepped up to contribute a whopping $100,000 to BC Dairy’s Flood Recovery fund also. Additionally, they are offering to match up to $50,000 for contributions made from its Cooperative members and employees through United Way’s United for BC Flood Response Fund. “Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the floods, and we want to help in any way we can,” says Agrifoods Chair, Tim Hofstra. “We understand this is a difficult time for BC’s farmers and the communities that were evacuated. Although we cannot replace all that has been lost, we hope that these funds will help people rebuild and work towards their future.”
We wish you a happy and healthy holiday season from our family to yours!
Another gesture of support, this time all the way from Ontario – The commissions from their Jersey Ontario SNF Buster sale have been earmarked for the BC Dairy Flood Recovery Fund. People care. We are all dairy family...

long time as Fraserland Farms. But the next generation operating as Fraserland Organics has not forgotten their dairy roots – and came forward to donate 100 tons of spuds to help feed the displaced cattle resulting from the devastating floods in Sumas Prairie. At one time, cull potatoes, carrots and other vegetables were a regular economical dairy feedstuff. This time, thanks to the Harris family and longtime friend and neighbour Mike Wolzen (who trucked the spuds on his dime), the potatoes are a feast for fostered females!
