        Gerrit
Vaandrager
September 18, 1939 – September 2, 2021
Gerrit Vaandrager was born on September 18, 1939 to Daniel and Gertrude Vaandrager in Barendrecht, the Netherlands. Gerrit was the oldest child, with one sister and three brothers.
In 1950, the family immigrated to Canada, spending five years in Hatzic Prairie working on the Dale farm. In 1955, the Vaandragers moved to the farm on McKenzie Road. They
had very little and worked hard to improve things.
After graduating from Abby Senior, Gerrit got a job working for the provincial department of agriculture, blood testing poultry. He also kept busy helping his dad build up the farm. During that time, he started registering a few cows under the Lavender Farms prefix.
Gerrit wed Jan Segaar on April 2, 1964 in Manhattan, Montana. They were blessed with four children: Calvin, Mark, D.R. and Carol. They started to farm on their own on a rented farm on Harris Road in Matsqui in 1966. In April of 1969, the family moved to McKenzie Road where D.R. and Angela and family live today.
In 1989, Gerrit helped Mark start a new business, Vaandrager Nurseries. Then 15 years later, another dairy farm was purchased in Saskatchewan for Calvin and Diane.
Gerrit was a founding member of Living Hope CRC where he served many terms as an elder. He served his community on the boards of Community Services, Agrifair, Abbotsford Christian School, as well as volunteering at ARH. Though Gerrit and Jan moved off the farm in November 1999, Gerrit remaining involved and never wanted to miss Classification days. He was very excited to see Lavender Farms win a Master Breeder Shield this spring, and we are thankful that he was part of that evening.
Gerrit was a faithful and kind loving husband, father, and grandpa. He is survived by his wife Jan of 57 years, children Calvin and Diane (Craila Dairy, Saskatchewan), Mark and Susan (Vaandrager Nurseries, Abbotsford), D.R. and Angela (Lavender Farms, Abbotsford), and Carol and Keith Christians (Grand Rapids, Michigan). He was blessed with 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Maria
Magdalena
Roemer February 17, 1930 - October 29,2021
Maria was born in Neustadt, Germany.
She met Erich while working on an estate
farm close to Celle, Germany. Erich looked
after the cows while Maria worked in the
fields. They were married August 4, 1951.
She came by ship to Canada in 1954 with
her infant son Heinz to meet up with Erich
who had come to Canada a few months
earlier to work on a dairy farm. Speaking
no English on arrival, Maria soon taught herself! They settled in Picture Butte, Alberta. Erich later worked in a lime plant in Coleman. Dagmar was born two years later. After several years in Alberta, they moved to the Cowichan Valley, their forever home.
Erich and Maria had over 100 pigs prior to dairy farming full time. They started with a few cows and in 1967 purchased the Jersey herd from Matt Moir. They developed a highly regarded Jersey herd which they sold to Johnsons in Alberta, allowing them to continue developing their high-end Roemers Holsteins herd, which won numerous production awards over the years.
Maria was a strong and courageous woman who loved her family with all her heart. She enjoyed visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and watching the family farm flourish. Maria loved to bake. She created from scratch and used the intuition of a true master to develop the perfect flavors. She loved to watch the joy on her family’s faces as they’d bite into her delectable creations. Maria loved to knit and sew. She knitted for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Those sweaters and blankets will be treasured by all. She lived at home on the farm until just recently. The family feels blessed to have had her in their lives for so long.
Maria is survived by her son, Heinz (Yvonne), her daughter Dagmar (Gerry Pattison), her five grandchildren: Tia (Tim), Karl (Stephanie), Diana (Josh), Christopher (Emily), Nicole (Jeff) and her 10 great grandchildren, as well as her brother-in-law Franz (Helga) and sister-in-law Gisella and many nieces and nephews in Germany. She was predeceased by her husband Erich in 2010.
