On Thursday, November 4, 2021, three members of the Blair family presented a donation of $10,000 on behalf of all the children of W.C. and Doris Blair to the BC Farm Museum Association. This donation was made possible by Doug and Anne Blair (Cobble Hill), Alan Gregson (Jean Blair, Langley), Jim and Marilyn Blair (New Norway, AB), Terry and Lynne Blair (Brisbane, Australia), John and Sonya Blair (Langley), Gordon and Cindi Blair (Salmon Arm). The donation will be used in the ‘Help Load The Wagon’ fund which will be used for museum expansion.
The BC Farm Museum collects, restores and preserves artifacts from almost every area of agriculture in BC. There are currently over 6000 items on display, all of which have been donated since the museum opened in 1966. The collection includes carriages, tractors, planting and harvesting equipment, Dairyland milk wagon, ploughing and grains, blacksmith shop, winepress, logging, saws, communication, photography, surveying, women’s contribution to pioneer life in a mural and the farm kitchen and parlor as well as the textile room - sewing, spinning, weaving, windmills, small engines, sawmill, egg grading, tomato grading, rope making, cream separation and butter making, washing machines, harnesses and saddles, and more. The majority of these items are in operating condition.
The museum is literally packed to the rafters and is looking to expand its capacity. There is an active volunteer team who keeps the motors running, gives tours, archives the collections, organizes the extensive library and administers the office. The library contains many historical agriculture books and magazines such as Hoard’s Dairyman, The Holstein Journal, and Country Life, to name just a few. The museum is now closed for the winter season but may be opened for organized tours. The website is www.bcfma.com.
The Blair family had owned and operated Langview Farms in Langley for over a century. They have a deep love of agriculture, respect for history, ties to the community, so it was a great fit for a donation. They would encourage other farm families to check out the BC Farm Museum, and perhaps make a (tax deductible) donation of their own.
History belongs to everyone, and who will help preserve the memories and materials of this remarkable way of life, if not farmers?
