 FARM SAFETY
   Averting
a Disaster
by Being
Prepared!

About nine years ago, Rudi Meier took on the responsibility to manage the Fire Safety program at U&D Meier Dairy in Abbotsford that he runs with his brother Karl. He started off adding a few fire extinguishers (FE) in choice locations, and has added a few each year, as Fraser Valley Fire Protection does their annual check across all units. “We have 25 fire extinguishers around the farm now – at entrances and exits in each barn, shop, garage and in the houses too.” He indicates the need for a FE close to any electrical breaker panel and furnaces. There’s even a heavy-duty 30lb FE with the forage harvester – the tractor and harvester run hot during harvest times. “We had a fire at the tractor – built up dust – and we could knock it down because we had a fire extinguisher right there,” he confirms, “Things happen quickly!”
More recently, in the February cold snap, he was reminded again of the importanceofbeingprepared.Heaters had been running in the milk house steady to keep things from freezing. Late in the evening, his daughter Noelle noticed an unusual orange glow

in the dairy from her bedroom window. Alerting her dad immediately, Rudi was able to race to the dairy and put out the electrical fire with his well- placed, functioning FE. The culprit? Years of slow corrosion from a moist environment had shorted out some wires.
“Don’t be complacent – don’t think it can’t happen to you,” he implores. “It gives you a fighting chance to put it out – we put out two fires in the same year.” He further added alarms for fire and CO in the milk house, parlour and utility room. “The alarms just give us one more step of protection – it’s reassuring.” What’s most important? “Have a plan. Make sure everyone knows what the plan is. Have your systems and extinguishers checked annually. It’s cheap,” concludes Rudi with absolute conviction.
